Travel photography is only fun if your gear doesn’t drag you down. While you’d like to carry everything while traveling, it isn’t practical. In fact, you want to travel minimally, with versatile lenses that work in many situations. So, what should you take along? To answer the question, we have travel photographer Allison Anderson to share some of her favorite focal lengths to carry around when traveling:
“When traveling, it’s important to maintain the delicate balance of having the right gear with you to shoot any situation but not having so much gear that it weighs you down.”
Anderson talks about some of the different focal lengths that she likes to carry with her when traveling. She also sheds light on the various use cases of each focal length. Her decision on what focal length to carry is based on where she’s going and what she’ll be shooting.
It is thus important for you to be clear about the purpose of your shoot. For instance, if you’ll be shooting a little bit of everything, a 24-70mm would be a good place to start. But if the purpose of your travel is to shoot wildlife, you might want to look at the 100-400mm range. On the other hand, if environmental portraits and detailed shots are your thing, then a 16-35mm would best fit the purpose.
Lastly, if you prefer traveling with a prime lens, then go for a 35mm. The images that it produces have a classic look and the focal length is great for any purpose.
What is your favorite lens to carry around when you’re traveling? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
