Beginner photographers spend most of their time worrying about camera settings. In the process of playing with camera settings, a common mistake is changing too many variables. But as photographer Jared Polin explains in today’s video, it is better to tackle one variable at a time. Join him as he discusses the “code” behind the exposure triangle to help you understand better:

One important thing that Polin talks about is how you can build exposure by altering the different elements of the exposure triangle. He shows how you can vary only the aperture, shutter speed or ISO, and compensate for any change by altering any of the two other variables to achieve the exact same exposure.
However, it is also essential to understand the side effects of altering any of those variables. For instance, besides affecting exposure, aperture also impacts depth of field, shutter speed affects motion blur and ISO affects image details. Any change that you make must therefore be an educated one.
Beyond adjusting exposure, understanding the triangle will give you a better understanding of how photos are composed. Ultimately, you will feel more comfortable working in manual mode.
