Star gazing might include a glimpse of a planet when the conditions are just right. Photographer Jason Domogalla hiked through Oregon on trails that were usually closed off but because of the dry season were accessible during the winter. The mountain in the background is Mount Jefferson. The brightest point in the sky is Jupiter, and the man on the ground is Domogalla himself, clearly enjoying the view while lying on a frozen Russell Lake:
There are a few planets that can be seen with the naked eye from Earth, and Jupiter often shines the brightest. Taking a long exposure of the night sky with so many bright stars and planets provides a lot of ambient light to create a bright image like this one.
