While camera gears are something that’s essential for you to produce any sort of content, they should not be a hindrance by any means. You don’t need sophisticated equipment to produce quality content, but they do help in making your life easier. And a gear that’s best for someone may not essentially be the best for you. It’s all subjective. In this context, photographer and filmmaker Aidin Robbins, who frequently has to cover the distance, and chase light and weather talks about some of the gears that he uses for his outdoor filmmaking and photography purposes:
“Buying a certain camera or drone won’t make you better at your craft.”
In this elaborate video, Robbins beautifully talks about all the gears that he carries around to get his job done. And the good thing is that he also talks about why that particular equipment suits him along with its pros and cons.
From all the discussion, one unique conclusion you can draw is that your gears don’t need to be perfect. Sometimes, it may feel like they’re impractical, but despite that feeling, they deliver unique results that fulfill your need. For instance, the 14mm f/1.8 lens that Robinson owns is bulky and can’t even attach filters, yet he uses it religiously solely for the unique look it delivers. And that’s what makes it special.
Another very important point that he raises towards the end of the video is with regards to marketing. Companies come up with new iterations of their product almost every year. And each iteration is supposedly the best one and promises the ultimate solution to everything. And this repeats every year. So, whenever you’re planning to get yourself new gear, be sure to weigh out the pros and cons and don’t fall for the marketing gimmicks.
Finally, understand that its not about picking the best camera or the best lens. It’s more about building a system that works best for you; you need to be comfortable with it and make the system work for you. So, decide wisely.
