Ask any photographer and they can tell you how important composition is. Further, they’ll also be able to share with you a ton of techniques to improve composition. However, not all such composition techniques are fool proof. And some of them tend to complicate the scene. In fact, there are only a handful of such composition techniques that can make a landscape image stand out every time. In today’s video, photographer Nigel Danson talks about one composition tool that he uses in almost all of his photos:
“There’s one tool, one element of composition that I think is powerful than any other: diagonal.”
Diagonals are interesting because they do a great job of adding a sense of dynamism in an image. While things appear very much stable when they’re straight, they can feel boring too. And diagonals do a great job of breaking such sense of comfort.
Diagonals are powerful too because thy add a sense of movement and depth in an image. Even our eyes tend to naturally follow the path carved out by diagonals. Using them when composing your photos is thus a great way to make images that are visually engaging.
In the video, Danson shares a number of examples that make great use of diagonals. And as you can see, they’re not just visually appealing, but are also full of energy. And towards the end of the video, you’ll also get to see how you can create shapes using diagonals to take your images to the next level.
Next time, when you’re composing your images, be sure to keep an eye out for opportunities to include diagonals. You’ll certainly get to see how diagonals can elevate the energy level in your images.
