Photoshop can get a bad rap in the media when it’s abused to overly alter photographs so they no longer represent reality, but sometimes an artist can use it to do just the opposite. Photographer Joaquin Villaverde made a timelapse while he restored and colored an old black and white photograph that was damaged by time and wear:
It starts out looking like a lost cause; the paper is creased and torn and the image is faded. Villaverde says he spent about an hour and a half working on it, taking an hour of video and condensing it into three minutes.
He does heavy edits on the image but everything he does makes the image come alive and better reflect how it once looked. Once he adds color you can really see the power of Photoshop and the skill of the user.
Photo restoration is a big market for people who are trying to convert their old family photos into a digital format and a valuable skill for photographers and their business.
