It’s very rare that you arrive at a location and find the perfect conditions. Landscape photographers usually spend hours, if not days, waiting for exactly the right light, weather and cloud patterns. But if you are lucky enough, you don’t need to waste time to take a mind-blowing landscape photo. Take for instance the following image by photographer Abe from Lyon’s Overlook in Roxborough State Park, Colorado:
“Not a whole lot of thought went into the composition. But sometimes the light is so great you just do what you can.”
Abe shot the image with a Sony A7RII and a 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens at 70mm, f/11, 1/160th of a second, ISO 50.
It’s crazy how the lush green vegetation contrasts with the gigantic barren rocks. And the way he has composed this image, it almost appears that those rocks are the size of the hills in the distance. It is also worth noting that the patches of light in the vegetation subtly act as a leading line. Follow the light patches and it will pull you right into the image through the rocks and to the distant hills. Then there’s the dramatic sky in the background which adds that sense of thrill to the image.
While the landscape suggests a calm and peaceful environment, the clouds suggest otherwise. It’s like they’re ready to burst out any minute bringing in a thunderstorm. What a contrast!
