Like any other form of art, photography is quite subjective. What appeals to one, may not essentially appeal to others. Likewise, if somebody says an image is bad, it doesn’t mean the end of the world to the photographer. What matters most is that the photographer captured what he’d visualized in his mind while having fun when doing it. In this video, photographer Adam Karnacz talks about why you should not be affected by what others think of your work:
It’s not necessary for the type of photography you do to be liked by the masses. Everybody has their own version of good photography and it varies from person to person. This is why you will come across such varied critiques and comments on what you do. How you take it depends on whether you take photos for others’ liking, or for your own creative pleasure.
If you do it for the liking of others, like when working for clients, you do need to listen to what they say and improve yourself accordingly. But again, since the definition of liking is subjective, you’ll need to adapt quite frequently. However, if it’s your creative expression that others don’t like, then that’s probably due to a difference in your creative outlook. It doesn’t essentially mean that your photos are bad. And you don’t need to feel bad about it whatsoever.
