If you’re a beginner in photo editing or have recently purchased Luminar Neo, you may find yourself at a loss on how to get started. Look no further, Darlene Hildebrandt, the mastermind behind Digital Photo Mentor, is here to guide you through the process. In her recent video, Darlene provides an exhaustive tutorial on how to bring your photos to life using basic editing techniques in Luminar Neo:
The tutorial covers a wide spectrum of common issues encountered in photography, such as fixing dark or light images, adjusting contrast, and working with color. The primary tool used throughout the session is ‘Develop Raw’ in Luminar Neo.
One of the key elements Darlene emphasizes on is adjusting color. The video demonstrates this process using an image taken in Trinidad, Cuba, with an abundance of colors. The use of the histogram, a graph showing the tonal distribution in your image, is also highlighted. This tool is an essential guide to ensuring your edits are accurate.
To adjust color, Darlene walks viewers through the process of selecting the appropriate white balance preset, which is only available when editing RAW files. The ‘Targeted Adjustment Tool’, symbolized by a small eyedropper, is also introduced. This tool allows the selection of a neutral color (white, grey, or black) in the image, and it adjusts the color balance based on this selection.
Once you have a base color balance, you can fine-tune the image using the ‘Temperature’ and ‘Tint’ sliders. Darlene recommends adding both yellow and green to warm up an image and adding blue or magenta to cool it down.
The next part of the tutorial covers the common problem of underexposed (dark) photos. Darlene offers tips on how to adjust the brightness of your photos using the Light Panel in the Develop Raw tool. She recommends starting with the white slider to adjust the brightest tones in your image before increasing overall brightness with the exposure slider. She warns against “clipping,” which is losing detail in the brightest and darkest parts of the image.
Saturation, she explains, can be indirectly increased by adjusting the black slider. This step enhances the color without directly increasing the saturation, a unique and effective approach to photo editing.
Darlene’s tutorial is a comprehensive guide to photo editing in Luminar Neo, covering the essentials that every beginner needs to know.
