Stacking multiple exposures is common in landscape photography, but for this particular image there were more than just a few frames. Photographer Matt Molloy creates these images using what he calls a time stack technique to make works of art that look more like impressionist paintings than photos:

Time stacking, typically used to make star trail photos, uses Photoshop to stack hundreds of exposures and blending them together. Molloy wondered why he hadn’t seen it done before using daylight and tried his hand at taking multiple long exposures of the sunset and then stacking them. The results were dreamy impressionistic photos that convey a sense of time. Molloy made a tutorial explaining his method so you can give it a try!
