Serbian photographer Jelena Jankovic was lucky enough to capture this surreal shot at a Massive Attack concert in Croatia—a simple yet powerful piece of commentary on the rise of selfie culture:
After spending time as a photojournalist, Janković became enamored with theater photography. It was through this career shift that she became interested in the goings on of spectators and stage performers.
As she puts it, images act as a record of our existence. Pictures act as evidence of our daily goings on as well as reminders of our greatest moments. As this photo shows, the irony in this is that the act of pulling out a camera can often take a person out of the moment.
Janković’s work has resonated with experts on an international level. She was recently named a finalist in the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards, and this particular image received recognition among a pool of over 227,000 entries.
