In photography, there’s a lot you can learn from others—but even more that you can teach yourself. Being able to walk around and see the things that other people don’t notice is an ability that plays a large role in improving your photography. For example, in this image, someone walking down a beach sees wave after wave crashing upon the shore. A photographer stops to bend down and capture it:

Captured by Ger Kelliher at a thousandth of a second shutter speed, the camera captured the split moment when the water rises as it breaks over the rock. Time slowed down to this degree shows parts of life that we normally don’t account for. It can alter the texture of something liquid like water and transform it into an image that appears to be malleable. Having an eye for this will propel you a long way and help you to create appealing photographs.
