Double exposure is a creative photography technique wherein two different exposures are superimposed on the same frame. In analogue photography, you can achieve this by exposing the same frame multiple times. In digital photography, you can accomplish this either in-camera or by using software like Photoshop. This is an interesting creative exercise that you can easily try, even at home. In this video, photographer Maria Perez with B&H shares some interesting tips on how you can do double exposure while taking photos, both in camera and in Photoshop:
“A double exposure is a combination of two images, one laid on top of the other but with less opacity.”
Many digital cameras have a double exposure function built into them. Be sure to check your camera manual if you’re not sure about it. When using this function, the camera allows you to take two consecutive images and overlays them automatically for you. Just make sure that both of the images aren’t too busy.
“Before you even start, plan and envision what your two images are going to be.”
But in the case your camera doesn’t have this function, or you just want to create a double exposure out of images that you already have, you can use Photoshop. Perez takes you through a step-by-step process of how you can in the video. Be sure to check it out.
