Panorama photography is the best way to captures wide-angle views. You do this by taking multiple shots across the scene and later merging them in post-production. If you are looking to getting started with photographing panoramas or improve your skill, check out the video below: photographer Tom Mackie explains everything you need to know about panoramic photography.
The process that Mackie shares in the video is quite simple. He shows how you can take beautiful panorama photographs simply using your camera and a tripod. If you are really serious and have the time, you can use the nodal-point method. Otherwise, simply follow the tips that Mackie shares in the video, and the results will still come out looking brilliant.
A basic check you need to make is to ensure that your tripod and camera are well balanced. Make sure to balance your camera throughout the panning range; this is very important, otherwise, you will end up cropping a huge portion of your image when aligning your images. You can see in the video how Mackie ensures proper balance by using a bubble spirit level. If your camera has an in-built level gauge, you can use that too.
You should also ensure that the camera does not change its exposure settings every time you press the shutter. Similarly, make sure you lock the focus to one desired distance. As Mackie demonstrates in the video, you can easily do this by using manual exposure mode and manual focus respectively.
Further in the video, you’ll also get to know when to take vertical panorama versus horizontal panorama. Each of the orientations has its own set of advantages. And towards the end of the video, Mackie also takes you through a convenient way to stitch the panorama using Lightroom.
