The Kelimutu volcano on Indonesia’s Flores Island is one of nature’s most stunning displays of color and chemistry. The summit of the volcano contains three lakes, each of which changes hue depending on its inner alchemy of salts, oxides, rainfall, and the activity of the volcano. The only place on earth where this volcanic alchemy takes place, Kelimutu attracts photographers and tourists from all over the world. Shann Biglione‘s photo shows the westernmost lake, Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People), at the break of dawn:

Mount Kelimutu is the only place on earth where this amazing color variation takes place, but don’t think of taking a quick, refreshing dip in its waters: the lakes are highly acidic.
