How would you react to a single image that captures the moon, the Milky Way, a red hot lava flow, and a meteor? Did someone say “once in a lifetime”? That’s probably the best way to sum it up:

Mike Mezeul II captured this amazing, single composition on his Nikon D810 with a 14mm focal length, f/2.8, 25 seconds, and ISO 2500.
He made the image at Kalapana in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii. This is one of the riskiest of places to be shooting an image. Even the slightest miscalculation can end up in a fatal accident. By his own admission, Mezeul literally had seconds to take a photo before it become necessary to move or risk getting burnt.
The blood red color of the lava in sharp contrast to the blue and purple of the night sky and the brilliant white specks of the galaxy makes the image breathtakingly beautiful and frightening at the same time.
