No matter how long you’ve been taking photos, at times it must feel like your photography isn’t improving. Honestly, these sort of speed bumps are common. Don’t let such feelings drag you down. There are a lot of things you can do that can help you get better and overcome your creative block. Professional landscape photographer Nigel Danson shares a few simple tips he uses to help him spark some creativity:
One of the best things you can do is go somewhere new. A change of environment will open up new perspectives and present new opportunities. Of course, it might not be possible to get your best shot in a new place, but it will surely freshen things up and open up your mind.
Another great tip that Danson shares is to look closely and pay attention to details. Things can turn out to be very interesting when you look closely. Like Danson shares in the video, even a mundane beach looks different—and a whole lot more exciting—when he focuses on the minute details. A fantastic tip he shares in the same context is to use your phone to compose your shot. Be sure to try that out.
“When your mind starts thinking about nothing, then it can start to process ideas and creativity.”
Oftentimes, without even knowing it, we pressurize ourselves with the need to take the best photos possible. Unfortunately, this has a negative impact on our creativity. A fantastic idea, though counterintuitive, is to go out without your camera. This way you can spend more time studying potential subjects, observing light and the way it interacts with the subject. And while doing so, don’t forget to enjoy your surroundings. Clearing up your head makes a lot of room for creative thoughts.
There are a bunch of other useful tips that can help you to draw some inspiration and improve your photos. If you’ve been feeling stuck for any reason, we highly recommend that you watch the complete video. And be sure to try out a couple of Danson’s ideas. You’ll definitely benefit from them.
