PictureCorrect.com: What Photography Advice Would You Give to Your Younger Self?

Think back to when you just started taking photos. At times, didn’t you wish that someone more experienced would share some advice with you? In today’s interesting video, photographer The Photographic Eye shares five pieces of advice that he’d give to beginner photographers:

A common mistake many beginner photographers make is to be concerned more about technicalities. They even have a misconception that using manual mode is a must. But this takes all the fun out of photography. Instead of thinking about the technical aspects, Kilbee suggests beginners spend more time learning to make pictures.

“You don’t need to have an encyclopedic knowledge of how everything goes together.”

Another great point Kilbee raises is about self-assessment. It is pivotal that beginner photographers set goals and evaluate their performance against those goals. Otherwise, we can never tell how far we’ve come as photographers.

But while you’re evaluating your progress, it is also important that you don’t compare yourself to others. It’s okay to look at others’ work, enjoy them and even get inspired from them. Just don’t compare yourself to them.

Lastly, Kilbee also shares the importance of trying new genres, keeping an open mind and having the audacity to ask questions. You’ll be surprised to know how much fun photography can be for you once you let go of your assumptions. Similarly, you’d be surprised to find out how many people are willing to help you if you ask.

What photography suggestion would you give to a younger version of yourself? Be sure to share it in the comments below.
