When it comes to autumn photography, we’re used to seeing images that capture an entire forest changing color—or at least several trees doing so. But what photographer Alex Armitage photographed in Tallahassee, Florida, was quite different. A lone tree undergoing a color transformation in the middle of a water body is quite a scene to come across. Have a look for yourself:
Armitage took the image on a Canon 6D with the 70-200mm f/2.8L II lens at 165mm, f/8, 1/20th of a second and ISO 100. The image is a beautiful example of how a minimalistic photo can speak volumes.
When we usually observe the autumn photos, the colors excite us and carry a happy feeling. This image on the other hand is not so straightforward. The fact that it’s alone in the middle of a water body gives a sense of isolation. Also, the way that the branches bend downward, as if they’re slacking, gives a feeling as if it is “frowning”. But for Armitage, the feeling was the complete opposite when he took the photo.
“This photo reminds me of happiness. I distinctly remember how peaceful watching the fog roll across the lake and not even concerned with getting a photo I wanted. Sometimes photography is just a reason to get out of bed.”
The foggy background gives a calm mood to the image. It also acts as a backdrop against which the tree beautifully stands out. And then, there’s the reflection in the foreground that gives a feeling as if the whole image is a beautifully done oil painting. This is indeed a well taken image by the photographer that evokes a mixed feeling among viewers.
