There has always been a heated discussion about the importance of having the best gear with you. And in this context, you might have heard that gears do not matter a lot of times. However, landscape photographer Mads Peter Iversen believes that they do matter. It’s just that there’s nothing such as the “best gear”. With the right choice of camera gear, you can ensure that you’re making your own life easier. In this video, Iversen takes you through his landscape photography journey and talks about the gears that he used there:
“There is no best gear, well at least besides the gear that gets the job done.”
You might be in love with one of your particular camera gear. But, what good is it if it fails to deliver results in certain circumstances? For instance, your 50mm prime might be your favorite but can you use it to photograph a magnificent vista in front of you? Sacrificing a potential brilliant image for the sake of your love for a certain gear makes no sense at all.
This is why there’s nothing such as an ultimate gear. Whatever gets your job done becomes the ultimate gear for that situation. So, that’s why you can see in the video how Iversen doesn’t stick to a single lens during his Tuscany tour. Depending on where he’s visiting and what kind of photos he plans to take, the lenses he uses vary accordingly.
For instance, for a landscape shot, he uses a 28-200mm lens as it allows him to cover a wide as well as a field of view. But, when it comes to shooting the Milky Way, he switches over to the 20mm f/1.8 lens. That’s because the latter lens has a greater field of view and a wider aperture which makes it a perfect choice for night photography. And again, later in the video, you can see how he takes along with him, the 100-400mm lens to shoot a distant house amidst a beautiful landscape.
In essence, the gear that you use has to be optimal for the situation. Having the right equipment with your for a particular situation is what will allow you to derive the best results.
