PictureCorrect.com: Storytelling Photography Techniques as a Wedding Photographer

Storytelling is the most definitive way to make photos. Be it a wedding or a pre-wedding shoot, storytelling photography is the way to go. The challenge is dealing with such situations when you’re limited to just one lens. Photographer Caroline Tran demonstrates how she tells photographic stories with just a prime lens:

“I’m a big storyteller and I love telling the story of a couple in my imagery. So, one approach that I like to take is I like to find three different angles of the same photo.”

One way Tran tells the story of a couple is by taking three images, each time walking in a bit closer to her couple. In doing so, she crops ever more tightly and captures three different images of what is essentially the same scene.

The three different angels give her more options to choose from when she’s done with the shoot and needs to select images to deliver to her clients.

Tran also spills some of her secrets of cropping. She explains that she follows the general rules of photography, especially the rule of thirds when cropping her images. In one of her photos of a couple, she highlights the fact that the eyes of the couple orientate around one of the rule of third points.

She also stresses some of the general rules. Avoid cropping near joints. You really don’t want to crop out hands at wrists or entire arms at the elbow. Opt for something in between instead—between joints.

She also expresses her desire to get things right in the image rather than going back and having to then crop the image.

Try shooting the same scene from three different angles on your next shoot and let us know how it goes!
