PictureCorrect.com: Interesting Photo of the Day: Fog Waves

The San Francisco Bay area is by far one of the most beautiful places on earth to photograph. With the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, stunning skyline, gorgeous natural spaces, and dynamic weather, there’s pretty much something for every type of photographer. But, what happens when you go above the land? Landscape photographer Nicholas Steinberg takes us into a whole new, surreal world above Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County, CA, where he captures incredible fog waves:

Steinberg has been photographing fog around the San Francisco Bay area for years and has become quite the addict. He says he loves shooting anything fog and water related. This long exposure on Mt.Tamalpais was taken during sunset, giving the fog a blue, wavy, ocean-like look.

The fog gets too high to photograph during the summer, so he looks for higher ground to capture it. He likes to play around with different shutter speeds to either freeze the movement or increase the long, smooth flow. All of Steinberg’s compositions are done in camera; he doesn’t Photoshop the effects.

“I do this by putting on dark filters known as ND or Neutral Density filters that trick the camera into thinking it’s night time, forcing a longer shutter speed. Doing this is how I am able to get these smooth effects and sometimes I shoot up to 2 minutes depending on the flow. Too long and it can turn to mush and too short will be too textured.”
