PictureCorrect.com: Using a 70-200mm Camera Lens for Good Compositions

The lenses we use work as our eyes when taking photos. So, what we see and how we compose our photos is dependent on what focal length we use. For instance, we’re presented with a wider field of view when using a wide-angle lens. This can make it a bit more challenging to isolate the subject. On the other hand, telephoto lenses have a narrow field of view. This makes it easier to convey the story you have in mind for the viewers. Going into more depth on the subject, landscape photographer Nigel Danson explains how a telephoto lens can help you find better compositions and improve your photography:

Danson particularly highlights how a 70-200mm lens can help you in improving your composition and taking better photos. Overall, a telephoto lens can improve your composition by simplifying your photos. With a longer lens, you can isolate smaller sections of your frame and draw attention to the areas that really matter. A simple image without clutter is always better and much more powerful.

Also, by eliminating most of the surrounding scene, and by including a smaller yet interesting portion of the frame, you can add a sense of mystery in your composition. By leaving some bits to the viewers’ imagination, your images can be more dramatic and mysterious. Revealing everything often isn’t the way to go.

If you’ve been struggling with your composition, try out the tips Danson is talking about. If you don’t have a longer lens, try renting it, or borrow one from a friend. Spend some time with it and you’ll realize that your composition will get much better.
